On May 12, Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department announced a Pierce County man in his 40s was diagnosed with measles.

We investigate infectious diseases as part of our foundational public health services. We learn which public places patients visited while infected, and work to notify those who were potentially exposed. In some cases, that means contacting hundreds of people.

In this case, the patient had been to Sea-Tac Airport and an after-hours meeting at Orting High School. On May 15, we confirmed one new case in Pierce County. We also learned of new cases in King and Snohomish counties.

As with any disease investigation, we want to make sure everyone who might be at risk is notified so they can take action. If you have been exposed, the first thing to do is to look at your immunization records to make sure you are protected.

Locations of potential exposure to measles

Transmission of measles can occur before people know they have it. Below are the public places the Pierce County patients visited. The Department of Health has information on cases and exposure sites in other counties.

These times include when the person was at the location and two hours after. Measles virus can stay in the air for up to two hours after an infected person leaves.

Measles symptoms begin seven to 21 days after exposure. If you were potentially exposed, call a healthcare provider promptly if you develop an illness with fever or unexplained rash. To avoid possibly spreading it, do not go to a clinic or hospital without calling first to say you think you have measles.
