Be in the know about the wood stove rule.

We want to help residents have warm homes, while protecting our air quality. To make sure you are following the rule, you need to use a certified wood stove in Pierce County’s Smoke Reduction Zone.

  • Applies only to uncertified wood burning stoves in the Smoke Reduction Zone.
  • Requires you to remove or render inoperable any uncertified wood stove. Most stoves made before 1990 usually need to be replaced.
  • You may qualify for an exemption if you have no other adequate heat source. Puget Sound Clean Air Agency grants these specific exemptions.
