Health Advisory: Tuberculosis Contact Investigation

June 7, 2019

We are conducting a tuberculosis (TB) contact investigation at Tacoma Rescue Mission. A person living homeless with TB slept there. We are working closely with Tacoma Rescue Mission to identify potentially exposed people for testing and treatment. We may find other exposure sites during our investigation. Currently, we do not suspect any exposure risk to the public.

TB is not easily spread. It requires close contact with a person with TB, like sleeping or living in the same space.

Requested actions

While TB incidence in Pierce County is low, when evaluating patients with symptoms consistent with TB, include TB in your differential diagnoses. Especially if your patient:

  • Has had a cough for more than 3 weeks.
  • Lived homeless in the last year.
  • Lived or was born outside the United States.

For further guidance, see our TB information for providers page and our TB screening page. To speak with a Health Department TB nurse, call (253) 798-6052.
