Population Demographics

As a public health agency this health department is distinct in our approach, in that we measure and strive to affect health on a population level. In our work it is essential that we understand the characteristics of the Pierce County population and its communities, as well as how each changes over time. Such population characteristics are often referred to as demographics.

Health risks and health-related needs change with age. Knowing the race and ethnic make-up of Pierce County allows us to monitor the health of minority groups that may be at greater risk of poorer health and respond to their needs. Health status and risk are often associated with inter-related socioeconomic factors such as income and education. Accurately estimating the size of this population and its subgroups is critical in calculating measures of health status such as rates of disease and death.

Pierce County Population Profile provides a description of the county population around the demographic characteristics of age, gender, race and ethnicity, as well as selected socioeconomic factors.
