Waste Disposal Authorization
The health department oversees the handling and disposal of solid waste in Pierce County. The health department is often called upon to determine if a waste is acceptable for disposal at a local landfill. Typically the health department's Waste Management Program staff will need to decide if a particular type of waste is a "solid waste" (non-hazardous) or a "dangerous waste" (hazardous). Only solid waste may be disposed of in permitted landfills and transfer stations operating within Pierce County.
The health department has a process to determine the waste type prior to its final disposal. In addition, the health department reviews waste that, while not hazardous in a chemical or environmental sense, may be hazardous to the public, environment, or facility employees. This process is called the Waste Disposal Authorization (WDA) Process.
