Smoking in Public Places

The law, which amended the former Clean Indoor Air Act, was adopted in the November 2005 statewide election. The new law expands the Clean Indoor Air Act to include all restaurants, bars, bowling alleys, skating rinks and non-tribal casinos and requires at least 75% of hotel rooms to be smoke-free.

Tacoma Pierce County Health Department is responsible for assuring that all affected businesses in Pierce County are smoke-free. Businesses that continue to allow indoor smoking at their establishments and outdoor smoking within 25 feet of doors and windows may be fined and face legal action as described in the Smoking in Public Places law.  No Smoking signs must be conspicuously posted at their establishments. The new law became effective December 8, 2005.  To submit a smoking complaint, click here.

Resource kits are available to businesses. To get your kit or for general questions contact ghermosillo@tpchd.org or call 253 798-7664.
