All cities and towns in Pierce County eligible for recognition

Jurisdictions making strides in addressing root causes of health encouraged to apply for first-ever award. May 27 is deadline for applications.

TACOMA, Wash. – Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department wants to recognize communities that have made special efforts to influence public health with the first-ever Healthy Communities Awards. All jurisdictions in Pierce County, the 24 cities, towns, and the county, are eligible to apply.

Every community in Pierce County can have a positive influence on public health. By incorporating health considerations into decision-making, jurisdictions within the county can achieve better health outcomes for all people and places.

“Healthy communities put into practice comprehensive plan policies to address the social, economic and environmental factors that make for good health,” said Amy Pow, Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department principal planner. “We launched a Healthy Communities Awards Program to honor local jurisdictions making a difference in creating healthy places” Pow said.

The Health Department will award a platinum, gold, and silver recognition based on criteria such as public engagement, policies, and plan implementation. Jurisdictions can apply for awards by May 27 at 4 p.m. at: http://www.tpchd.org/files/library/e30b5b85eacdaf94.pdf. The awards ceremony will be held during each year’s Pierce County Regional Council General Assembly.
