January 9, 2014

Protect your loved ones, community against illness

TACOMA, Wash. - Protect your family and loved ones against the flu. Children and youth can get a free flu vaccination this Saturday, Jan. 11, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at South Hill Mall in Puyallup near the Old Country Buffet entrance. A parent or guardian's permission is required.

Flu vaccination is free for children from ages 6 month to 18. Flumist and flu shots will be available. Adult vaccine will be available for $30.

MultiCare Children’s Immunization Services, Medical Reserve Corps of Pierce County, and the Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department are sponsoring this flu clinic.

Health officials say that influenza season has arrived and activity still has not peaked. Local hospitals are reporting many people being hospitalized with influenza. Getting an annual flu shot is the best thing people can do to protect themselves and their families against the flu.

"People are coming down with Influenza A 2009-H1N1, the virus that caused the influenza pandemic of 2009," said Nigel Turner, Communicable Disease Control Division director. "This virus tends to strike younger age groups and can be severe, especially for pregnant women, infants and young children, and people with health conditions such as asthma and diabetes." This season's flu vaccine offers protection against this H1N1 flu strain.

Flu vaccines are available at many locations including health care professional's offices, pharmacies, and some local health agencies. The Department distributes free flu vaccine for children to medical providers throughout Pierce County. Talk to your medical provider for more information.

The health department publishes an extensive calendar of free and low-cost vaccination clinic opportunities for children as well as links to providers of free or low-cost flu shot providers for adults on its web site at www.tpchd.org/flu.
