Smoke-Free Housing Pierce County reports 2012 successes

January 17, 2013

Tacoma, Wash. - Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department has 122 reasons to celebrate the year anniversary of its Smoke-Free Housing Pierce County program.

Thea’s Landing was the 122nd property to join the Department’s registry that offers smoke-free multi-family housing choices to those who want to live in a healthier environment. The new 189-unit community located at 1705 Dock St. in Tacoma brings the combined number of apartment units represented on the registry to 2,254. Another 433 single family residences are also listed.

The program launched with 32 apartment communities in December of 2011. Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department promotes the smoke-free housing registry as an important part of its mission to safeguard and enhance the health of the communities of Pierce County.

“The growth in our smoke-free housing program reflects the changing health priorities of Pierce County residents and the popularity of our registry demonstrates that more people are looking for healthier living options,” said Frank DiBiase, Environmental Health Division assistant director.

To promote the benefits and availability of smoke-free living options to Pierce County residents, the health department developed a comprehensive media campaign that includes:

  • Live Smoke-Free Website - offers a list and map of smoke-free properties in Pierce County. It also includes the benefits of smoke-free housing for residents and landlords who are considering making their property smoke-free.
  • Television Advertising - An ad (in English and in Spanish) highlighting the dangers of secondhand smoke in multi-unit housing aired more than 5,000 times on the Comcast and Click! networks in 2012.
  • Transit Ads - Pierce Transit bus and transit shelter ads on the benefits of smoke-free living reached more than 650,000 people in 2012.
  • Online Ads - and Facebook ads linked back to and were viewed more than 135,000 times.

Some elements of the advertising campaign will continue in 2013.

The Smoke-Free Housing Pierce County Task Force is a group of property owners, managers and representatives of property management organizations that meet bi-monthly to promote smoke-free housing options. The group has provided input for the health department’s media campaign, educational material and smoke-free housing policies.
