National Tobacco Expert to Speak in Tacoma

November 30, 2011

TACOMA, Wash., November 29, 2011   The Tobacco-Free Alliance of Pierce County, a coalition supported by the Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department, will host Dr. Jeffrey Wigand at its annual summit on December 2. Wigand, a national expert on tobacco issues and noted whistleblower on the deceptions of the tobacco industry, will provide a keynote address regarding the latest tobacco research, emerging issues, federal regulations and tobacco policies.

“Tobacco remains the number one cause of preventable death in the United States, and the continued harm done to individuals, families and communities by this drug is a true tragedy,” said Dr. Anthony L-T Chen, Director of Health, Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department. “We are thrilled to bring Dr. Wigand’s powerful message to our community as we persevere in our efforts to safeguard the people of Pierce County from the harmful health effects of tobacco.”

“The best cessation treatment is preventing the use of the first tobacco product; this is 100% effective and comes from educating our children on how the industry targets them,” noted Dr. Jeffrey Wigand.  “Enabling knowledge will afford them the rational approach to critical healthy choices.”
