Online Food Card Classes Now Offered By Health Department

January 3, 2011

Tacoma-Pierce County WA, 1/03/2011- Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department now offers the option of getting a food worker card online, as well as in person. Food workers are required by the state to take a test showing basic knowledge about food safety, to help prevent people eating at restaurants and other places from getting sick. Once someone takes the class and passes the exam online, they can also pay and print out the required food worker card online.

"We looked at what's needed to protect the public's health and how to increase the convenience for community members, " said Steve Marek, Director of Environmental Health, "An online system will provide people with the education they'll need to safely serve food and also provides more flexibility to make it easier for people to obtain a food workers card."

Getting a food worker card online takes about 60 minutes, while getting one in person takes about 90 minutes. The online class is available in English, Spanish, Korean, Vietnamese, Cambodian, Mandarin, Cantonese, Russian and closed caption. For those who do not have internet access, the Department has computer kiosks available Monday through Friday, 8:30 am - 2:30 pm, by appointment only. Most local public libraries also have computers available with internet access. The Health Department will continue to offer classes Mondays and Fridays at 9:00 am and 2:00 pm and Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6:00 pm.

To remain certified as a Food Worker, an individual needs to re-take the test every two years.

The cost of the online training, test and card is $10.00, the same as if someone takes the class at the Health Department.

The online program is currently available to Pierce County residents only. Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department has shared the online food worker card program with other health departments throughout Washington. In the upcoming months, several other health departments will also provide the online food worker card program to residents in their counties.
