H1N1 Flu Claims 12th Local Victim

January 5, 2010

A Pierce County man's death Dec. 31 has been confirmed as resulting from H1N1 flu, the Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department announced today.

The man, who was in his 20s, had underlying health conditions and had been in the hospital for several weeks.

A dozen Pierce County residents have died from flu-related illness since the H1N1 outbreak began in April 2009 and nearly all were confirmed as the new strain of H1N1. Two of the 12 previously were announced as H1N1 deaths but have been reclassified simply as flu deaths, because of a change in the way flu-related deaths are reported to the Washington State Department of Health.

The Health Department advises that vaccination is the best prevention against flu. The department offers a free, walk-in H1N1 flu vaccination clinic each Wednesday from 10 am to 6 pm at the Health Building, 3629 South D Street, Tacoma. Free onsite parking is provided.

A list of upcoming H1N1 flu vaccination clinics and other information is available at http://www.tpchd.org/page.php?id=499.
