Tobacco Free Kids Club
The Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department and Mary Bridge Children's Hospital and Health Center developed a model set of tobacco lessons to be infused with current health and substance abuse curriculum aimed at changing students' perceptions and attitudes regarding a variety of tobacco-related issues.
The Tobacco Free Kids Club program consists of two 30-minute "activity sessions" for each grade 1-6. Each series of grade-level activities culminates, at the end of session 2, in the students' publicly committing to remain tobacco free by signing a poster-sized "class pledge" hanging in the classroom and an "individual pledge" to take home.
- Grades 1-3 capitalize on young children's interest on how their bodies work by learning about their respiratory and circulatory system and the immediate harm tobacco causes on those systems.
- Grades 4-6 continue to focus on normative education and social influences while introducing resistance skills and communication skills to instill in the students how much knowledge they have in order to empower them and reinforcing their pledge to be tobacco free.
