When and why we close a food establishment

We close food establishments when food safety practices pose a significant threat or danger to public health. When food service establishments can’t immediately correct an issue, we require them to stop operation to prevent injury or illness.

Reasons for immediate closure of a food service establishment:

  • Imminent health hazards.
    • Fire.
    • Flood.
    • Extended interruption of electrical or water service.
    • Sewage backup.
    • Misuse of poisonous or toxic chemicals.
    • Onset of an apparent foodborne disease outbreak.
    • Gross insanitary occurrence or condition.
    • Lack of refrigeration.

  • Other circumstances that might endanger public health.
    • Repeated high score on routine inspection (100 or more red points*).
    • Repeated occurrence of critical violation(s).
    • No operating permit. (The permit assures that they have met all of the structural and equipment requirements to support a menu).
    • The owner/manager interferes with the inspector's ability to do her/his duties.
    * Inspections with 35 or more red point require a follow up inspection.
